Companies Struggle to Modernise Identity Management Using Multi-Cloud Strategy

According to a survey, organisations are facing major obstacles in managing multiple identity providers (IdPs).

Today, more and more organisations are choosing to implement multi-cloud strategies to prevent data loss. However, whilst this has its benefits, companies are struggling to harmonise their Identity and Access Management (IAM) across separate environments. According to a survey conducted by the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), organisations are facing major obstacles in managing multiple identity providers (IdPs) due to incompatibilities as well as decades of accumulated technical debt.

Strata Identity commissioned a study on the “State of Multi-Cloud Identity: Insights and Trends for 2025” based on the CSA survey to further analyse this issue. The results of the study, founded on responses from 950 IT and security professionals, show that more than half of companies consider technical debt to be the top barrier to modernising their IAM systems.

More than two-thirds of respondents believe that incompatibility with non-standard or legacy applications is a barrier to deploying advanced authentication solutions, posing a major risk to security. With three-quarters of organisations managing two or more identity providers (11% using five or more), over a third of organisations are worried about their ability to monitor and control access policies in a multi-cloud environment. So what is being done?

In addition to addressing management challenges, many organisations are working to build more resilient identity systems. This is crucial, as in the event of an identity provider failure, only 28% of organisations claim to be able to activate recovery measures in less than an hour. Partnering with a single provider who can help with IT needs across the board may be the answer.
