Data disasters as serious as hurricanes and explosions

Just like in the finance industry, many IT specialists will tell you there is never a good time for a crash. But at least you can protect against an IT crash by using an effective disaster recovery system.

Just like in the finance industry, many IT specialists will tell you there is never a good time for a crash. But at least you can protect against an IT crash by using an effective disaster recovery system.

Human error is one of the most common reasons for sudden data loss, but whatever the cause, having a data recovery plan in place can ensure colleagues will be able to get back to work as soon as possible.

Warnings

In the US, digital disasters are taken so seriously, the country’s Ready Campaign – a national service which aims to educate Americans to prepare for, respond to and mitigate emergencies – now includes information on data recovery systems alongside its warnings about explosions, hurricanes and droughts.

The campaign says: “Businesses large and small create and manage large volumes of electronic information or data. Some of this is vital to the survival and continued operation of the business. The impact of data loss or corruption from hardware failure, human error, hacking or malware could be significant. A plan for data backup and restoration of electronic information is essential.”

Strategy

The campaign advocates developing strategies to mitigate the loss of the following system components:

  • Computer room environment (secure computer room with climate control, conditioned and backup power supply)
  • Hardware (networks, servers, desktop and laptop computers, wireless devices and peripherals)
  • Connectivity to a service provider (fibre, cable, wireless, etc.)
  • Software applications (electronic data interchange, electronic mail, enterprise resource management, office productivity, etc.)
  • Data and restoration

Given the technicalities in preparing for and maintaining all these factors, the warning is stark – ensure your firm has a suitable data recovery plan in place or face the consequences.
