The outage was triggered by a CrowdStrike software update that went awry, affecting over 8.5 million Windows devices and impacting business operations across banks, major airlines, healthcare services and numerous other sectors.
The July outage sparked worries that many businesses are ill-equipped and without backup plans should a single point of failure - like an IT system or a piece of software within it - encounters a problem. Microsoft’s summit looked at addressing these issues, with Microsoft executive David Weston saying, “Windows security ecosystem must come together to innovate a safer and more reliable world." Safe deployment practices including sharing data, tools and documented processes were discussed during the summit, as well as Windows 11’s improved security capabilities.
